It's funny that after immersing myself for the last 5 years in the online marketing and lead generation pool, I am more excited today than ever before!

The reason is simple...

Five years ago I started a new business selling electronic books on the internet.  Back then all you needed was: a) some original material or b) the rights to market some else's material and you were on you way.

The way we found our market was with Google Adwords... We were amazed at this whole new world of virtual 'possibility' clients.

But we didn't have the advantage of being able to use our sales charms on them, so we had to create short sharp and sweet 'landing pages', and have a great offer or something that would act as the 'honey':  Something that would make the visitor interact with us and at least leave us their email address so that we could include them in our fortnightly newsletter and grab them later!

Now...

From those days we business a business providing that service to people who didn't have the interest or inclination to do all the years of training and the expense of finding not only what DID work but also what DIDN'T work.  Phew! there were a few of those!

And we STILL RELY ON GOOGLE ADWORDS campaigns to bring us the bulk of our business that isn't from Referrals!

We've had to adjust the way we play the 'Google Game', as they have updated their Quality Score criteria, but we are happy with the enhancements, because the better we can match the criteria, the better position you're ad will get and a reduced CPC!  That's what we do for our clients!

What About Google Quality Score?

Google Quality Score And What It Means For you Today!

A little over 12 months ago Google quietly introduced new criteria to their search standards called Quality Score, to help them continue to bring high quality, relevant search results to their users.

The beauty of Google is that it enables you to advertise directly to an audience already looking for you, and Quality Score is used as the basis for measuring the quality of your keywords, your ad text and your website and landing page content and therefore, where your ads will be shown and how much you will pay per click

Let’s go back a step though…

Most people use Google as their preferred search engine because they can find what they are looking for, fast – whether it is the latest news, best candy bar or closest pizzeria.

This is the essence of relevance:  Google provides users with the most relevant search results based on their unique search.  However, relevancy does not end with the ‘organic’ search results that are shown on the left hand side of your search results.

Google also works to show the most relevant ads for each search query on the right hand side of your search results.

Just as a quick reminder, Google measure relevancy for organic search and ads differently.

So… What is 'Quality Score' and how is it calculated?

Quality Score is a dynamic variable calculated for each of your keywords. It combines a variety of factors and measures how relevant your keyword is to your ad text and to a user's search query.

A ‘Quality Score’ is calculated every time your keyword matches a search query—that is, every time your keyword has the potential to trigger an ad.    Quality Score is used in several different ways, including influencing your keywords' actual cost-per-clicks (CPCs) and estimating the first page bids that you see in your account.

Quality Score partly determines if a keyword is eligible to enter the ad auction that occurs when a user enters a search query to decide whether or not to show your ad, and if it is, how high a position the ad will be shown.

However, Quality Score is also determined by your keyword’s click-through-rate (CTR), the relevance of your ad text, the historical keyword performance and other relevancy factors like website and landing page content.

Having said all that, quality-based bidding simply means that your keyword’s Quality Score determines your minimum bid or the lowest amount that you can pay for your ad to run.  Google use this system to analyse your keyword’s performance, and to keep your ads as relevant and cost-efficient as possible.

This model works for users and advertisers alike, because the more relevant the ads are, the more likely users are to click on your ads now, and again in the future.

Basically, the higher your Quality Score, the lower your minimum bid and price you pay per click.
